The Joys of Driving in Iceland
Those who have experienced it, often say driving in Iceland was the highlight of their time here.
Those of you who like driving will enjoy the challenges the landscape and weather conditions offer. The gravel tracks which make up most of Iceland’s country roads are a joy to drive, if you have the right vehicle. We always advice caution and to reduce your speed according to road conditions, but on sections of the road you can really open up and test your driving skills.
The scenic pleasures en route are phenomenal; the land is littered with waterfalls, hot springs, glaciers and lagoons. Iceland is a lush green oasis in summer and a snow covered wonderland in winter; each season offering its own unique sights and thrills.

If you are driving in Iceland in winter (October to April) take a short drive in the country. Covered in snow, the land sparkles in the moonlight and you can see nature’s magnificent ice sculptures set against the blackest of night.
Travelling through this beauty requires a 4 wheel drive vehicle, typically a jeep. It’s a great thing to do with a companion, with whom you can share the peace and solitude with. However it’s also a great group activity, something to remember together. Plus the more of you there are, the safer it will be.
The summer brings in a whole new landscape. Green lush meadows roll for miles, waterfalls frozen in winter gush once more, and hidden lava fields are uncovered as the snow melts. Witness the amazing displays of the Northern Lights, which are most visible between March and September.
Driving in Iceland in summer is a completely different experience and not as challenging as in winter. Roll the windows down and take in the pure Icelandic air. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, play a Bjork CD. Being in her homeland, you may even be able to appreciate it as we do.
